The Junior Ranger Program is designed to teach young children about the natural history of Mt.
San Jacinto State Park. The program is conducted by state park volunteers and includes a short
lesson and demonstration of the four common conifers of Long Valley. Junior Rangers are shown
examples of the needles, pine cones, and bark. Tree cookies are used to show annual growth
rings. A tree branch is used to show how insects impact trees. At the end of the demonstration,
Junior Rangers are given a self-guided activity to complete in Long Valley.
Upon returning from the activity, he or she is sworn in as a Junior Ranger and given a badge.
