Bark: Silver-gray to white (which gives this tree its name); on older trees it is very hard, and rough; 4″ – 7″ thick Needles: 2” – 3”; grow singly off the branches almost at right angles; flattened, blunt tips Cones: Usually about 3”-5″ long, olive green to purplish; seldom found on the ground because they disintegrate while they are still on the tree. Cones grow erect on the branches towards the upper reaches of the tree. Elevation: 6000’ to 9000 Comments: One of the most common trees in the park, but seldom grows in pure stands. Seedlings do not grow well in open sun; young trees found mainly in shade of parent trees (shade tolerant). During the Christmas season, White fir is sold as “silver fir.” Photo: © Colin Barrows</image:caption>

Bark: Grayish brown to purplish brown on old trunks; broken by irregular fissures; like that of Jeffrey pine, but is redder; 1 ½” – 4″ thick Needles: Bundles of 5 short needles; 2”- 4”; blue green to gray green, spirally twisted; persistent until 2nd or 3rd season Cones: Cylindrical; 12” – 26”; longest of pinecones; 4″- 5″ diameter when open; yellowish-brown in color Elevation: 5000’ to 8000’ Comments: Sugar pine gets its name from the sugary sweet sap. Indians and early settlers chewed it as a gum. However, it is often reported as tasting like gasoline and has strong laxative properties. Young trees have spire tops but are flattened in the majestic old trees. The older trees often have drooping branches. John Muir considered this the most beautiful of all pine trees. The wood is valuable for use as interior lumber. Photo: © Colin Barrows</image:caption>

It also has a scent of vanilla or butterscotch, which gives the park its “mountain” smell. Jeffrey pine is the most common pine in the San Jacinto Mountains. The lumber is used for construction and fuel. Jeffrey pine sometimes hybridizes with Coulter and Ponderosa pine. Photo: © Colin Barrows</image:caption>

<image:caption>Pinus contorta Family: Pine (Pinaceae) Size:50’-100’ tall (usually 70'- 80'); 15"-18" diameter; max. 150' by 3' Age: Maturity reached by about 200 years. Recent studies indicate Lodgepole pine may live to 1,000 years. Bark: Orange-brown to gray, covered with small, thin scales (“cornflakes”) Needles: In bundles of 2 short needles, 1” – 3” long; yellow-green in color; persistent 4-6 seasons Cones: Numerous, 3/4"-2", prickly, nearly globular, asymmetrical at the base; purple to light yellow brown in color Elevation: Generally about 7000’ but found from 2000’ north to 11500’ south Comments: Lodgepoles grow straight in dense stands. The Indians of the Rocky Mountains used lodgepoles for erecting lodges or dwellings because the boles were long and straight. In the San Jacinto Mountains, they often grow contorted or stunted by wind and snow. The trees were also used for mine props, corral poles, cabin logs and railway ties. The lodgepole has adapted to grow in many areas—sunny hills, meadows, burned sites, often where other trees won’t grow. Generally likes moist, well-drained sandy or gravelly soil. It tends to establish after fires because the heat of the fire causes the cones to release their seeds. Successionally, however, this pine is often replaced by shade-loving trees, such as White fir. <image:caption>Cercocarpus ledifolius Family: Rose (Rosaceae) Leaves: Leaves about 1 in long x ¼ in wide; evergreen; edges roll under Flowers: Tiny flowers are solitary or in auxiliary clusters. Fruit is achene (dandelion like) with long, silky plume-like tail. Blooms: Mid to late summer; along concrete ramp from tram station; upper Chino Canyon Bark: Red-brown, furrowed bark is covered with persistent scales; inner bark yields red to purple dye; the roots, red dye. The bark was made into tea for colds and lung trouble. A young plant was pulled up whole, powered, mixed with water, and used as a laxative. Habitat: Open, dry, rocky areas; exposed, south-facing slopes; dry rocky ridges; 5000’ to slightly above 10,000’ Comments: A small, single-stemmed shrub; can grow 6 to 30 feet tall. The wood was used for fish spears, arrow shafts and digging tools. The common name “desert mountain mahogany” refers to its mountainous, arid habitat and reddish-brown wood. The name “curl-leaf” describes the evergreen leaves that roll under along the edges. Also known as “ironwood” which applies to it close-grained, very dense wood, exceedingly hard and heavy. The stems are thornless, but the related gooseberry does have thorns. The pink-red berries are edible and attract both birds and insects. We can eat them raw, cooked, or sun-dried. Both currant and gooseberry (R. roezlii) were used by Native Americans to make Pemmican, a deer-fat based food high in calories and nutrition. It was used as a food source when traveling and during winter in many areas of America. The wood was used for arrows. Photo: © Colin Barrows</image:caption>

Blooms: July, August Bark: Smooth, brown or gray Habitat: Ground cover on dry slopes, dry ridges in open coniferous forests; main ground cover on the slopes between Wellman’s Divide and Miller Peak; 2500’ – 11,000’ Comments: Chinquapin is a low spreading, round-topped bush, 3-6 ft. high. It is often growing with buckthorn (Ceanothus) and snowberry (Symphoricarpos parishii). The pincushion covering over the maturing nuts won’t deter diligent jays and nutcrackers (or hikers) which know about the tiny, tasty hazelnut inside. The seed pods resemble small chestnut burrs. <image:caption>Arctostaphylos patula Family: Heath Family (Ericaceae) Leaves: Ovate to rounded; 1-1 ¾” long; smooth; bright green Flowers: Flowers are bell-shaped, creamy white with pink hues. Large fuzzy berries in the fall Blooms: May and June Bark: Smooth, red bark is very distinctive, and peels away to expose pale new green bark growth underneath. Habitat: Gravelly, barren, sandy or dry rocky slopes; serpentine outcrops; especially burned or logged areas. Common in post-fire brush communities. Sprouts from basal burl or root crown. Common in CA chaparral. Comments: Several varieties grow forming enormous tree-like bushes (along Deer Springs Trail in Idyllwild) to low spreading shrub (along lower RV trail). Tea made from the berries was used to treat constipation; tea from the bark, diarrhea. Excellent browse for deer. Berries eaten by deer, small mammals, birds. “Manzanita” is Spanish for “little apple;” Genus name Arctostaphylos mean “beargrape” (Gr.) referring to the fondness shown by bears for fruits of these shrubs. <image:caption>Symphoricarpos rotundifolius var. parishii Family: Honeysuckle (Caprifoliaceae) Habitat: dry, open areas, rocky hillsides, ridges and along trails Characteristics: Pink, bell-shaped flowers dangle down from arching branches that root where the tips touch the ground (“adventitious rooting”). The roots are anchored strongly enough to trip an unsuspecting hiker. White berries appear in September and are toxic, as are the leaves. Leaves deciduous. Blooms: July, August; LV, RV, TV Comments: Snowberry provides browse for deer and nectar for bees, which produce white honey. Like nearly all white berries, snowberry fruits are toxic (poison: Saponin), as are the leaves. Native uses include mashing leaves with water to make a foaming shampoo to rid oneself of lice. The fruits are used as emetic and cathartic; roots are used to treat colds and stomachache. Photo: © Colin Barrows</image:caption>

<image:caption>Lupinus latifolius var. parishii Family: Pea (Fabaceae; old, Leguminosae) Habitat: open dry areas, under pines Characteristics: Many species of lupines grow in the San Jacinto Mountains. They may be tiny, half-inch tall, woolly plants with minuscule flowers or towering plants with dinner plate sized leaves. In the Long Valley area two-foot-tall plants grow on dry slopes and under open pines while the smaller species grow near the creek and in brushy areas. The flowers are indigo-purple typical pea flowers. The palmate leaves make lupine easily identifiable. Blooms: late June through August; LV to the peak along all trails; all over below ski center Comments: Lupine is considered toxic to most livestock, including horses, but its relative, alfalfa is a major livestock feed. <image:caption>Eumeces skiltonianus The Western skink is a scaly brown lizard that wiggles in snake-like fashion. The tail is easily lost, but a new tail grows. The bright blue color and movement of the shed tail attracts attention of predators, allowing the skink to escape. Zones of weakness in the tail vertebrae make possible a quick, clean break. The large artery in the tail contracts to prevent excessive bleeding. Skinks may be active during the day but prefer to be cooler than most other lizards. Description: Cylindrical shaped, lizard-like 6 ½” – 9” Gray, beige or brown, with or without stripes. If striped, a brown strip down the back border by whitish or beige strips which begin on the nose and end on the tail. Tail usually brown. Young have bright blue tails that fade to grayish brown as they mature. Smooth, shiny scales with rounded hind margins; no longitudinal rows of dark crossbars on back. Habitat: Rocky areas near streams, woodlands, forest clearings, broken chaparral, grasslands, dry hillsides, leaf litter; likes cover; often found under rocks, logs, or leaf litter. Range: Widely distributed in western mountain regions; northern AZ and southern NV and along CA coast to southern Baja California Food: Beetles, grasshoppers, crickets, leaf hoppers, moths, caterpillars, spiders, sow bugs. Skinks can identify prey by sight and taste; they touch tongue to potential food and decide whether or not to eat it. <image:title>Western Fence Lizard - Western Fence Lizard</image:title>
<image:caption>Sceloporous occidentalis The Western Fence Lizard is one of the spiny lizards. It is also known as a “blue bellied” lizard because of the blue patch on each side of its belly. Male lizards establish territories and attempt to drive away other males. Flattening the sides of its body, lowering skin of the throat, and doing “push-ups” that flash its blue markings make a threatening or warning signal. If the intruder does not turn away, a fight may ensue. The threatened lizard will grab the intruder in its jaws—but any part of it will do—and with a jerk of the head, attempt to throw the other lizard aside. Since fence lizards are diurnal (active during the day) they are often seen. Their body temperature is near that of humans. Description: 6” – 10 long Dark brown, gray, or blackish above. Pattern of paired blotches or wavy crossbars down the back give it a mottled look. Males have blue patches on throat and sides of belly; whitish to yellowish below; inside of hind legs distinctively yellow or orange on rear of legs. Habitat: Woodlands, open coniferous forests, grasslands, rock outcrops, fallen trees, lumber piles; avoids dense, shaded areas; very common Range: Far western U.S., central ID, south through NV to Pacific Coast; sea level to 9,000’. Food: Insects—beetles, ants, wasps, aphids, caterpillars; spiders Season: Active Feb to Nov; peak May to July; spend winter below ground or in rotting logs Reproduction: Comments: Photo: © Colin Barrows</image:caption>

      <image:title>Ensatina Salamander - Ensatina Salamander</image:title>
<image:caption>Ensatina escholtzii DESCRIPTION: An adult measures 3-6 inches in total length, with a large head and eyes, long legs, and a relatively short body. The colorful blotches range from orange to light cream or yellow. The tail is rounded and constricted at the base, which helps differentiate this salamander from other salamanders in the area. RANGE: Peninsular Ranges of southern California from the San Jacinto Mountains to northern Baja California. Can range to elevations up to 10,000 feet. HABITAT: They like moist, shaded pine forests and oak woodlands. They can be found under rocks, logs, and woody debris, especially bark that has peeled off and fallen beside logs and trees. FOOD: Food includes a wide variety of invertebrates, including worms, ants, beetles, spiders, scorpions, centipedes, millipedes, sow bugs, and snails. A salamander will thrust out a long sticky tongue to capture prey, crushing the prey in its mouth before swallowing. Typically feeding is done using sit-and-wait ambush tactics, but sometimes Ensatinas will slowly stalk their prey. PREDATORS: Predators include raccoons, owls, bears, snakes, jays, other salamanders and frogs. REPRODUCTION: Ensatinas are fully terrestrial and do not need to return to water to breed. Breeding usually occurs from November to March. After several hours of an elaborate courtship, involving the male rubbing his body and head against the female, the male deposits a gelatinous mass of sperm, or spermatophore, which is then picked up by the female’s cloaca and used to fertilize her eggs. In late spring, females will lay a single cluster of about 8 eggs. Most lungless salamanders lay eggs in moist places on land, such as in rotting logs or beneath bark, and may “brood’ the eggs by secreting large amount of mucus to prevent egg desiccation. The eggs usually hatch after four to five months. Unlike most other types of salamanders, frogs, and toads that have aquatic larvae that must hatch into water, the young Ensatinas hatch directly from the egg into inch-long terrestrial salamanders with the same body form as an adult. This is because the eggs are fluid-filled capsules – each larva floats in its own personal aquatic environment until it matures. STATUS: Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, it is listed as a California Species of Special Concern by the California Department of Fish and Game. NOTE: At lower elevations, you might find the Monterey Ensatina (Ensatina eschscholtzii eschscholtzii). It is not nearly as colorful, as the large-blotched Ensatina.</image:caption>
